what types of braces are available? First, let's discuss what "braces" are. When people use the term braces, they are referring to a collection of components made up of brackets and wires. The brackets are the little gizmos that are cemented to the teeth and consist of a bondable pad and a slot. The pad is used to cement or bond the bracket to the tooth and the slot is the portion that holds the wire. Brackets are made from several materials, including stainless steel (most common), titanium, translucent ceramic and plastic. Some brackets are made from a combination of the two, such as the Damon bracket, which is made of both stainless steel and plastic.
The wire is simply a spring that exerts force on the tooth or teeth. As in brackets, wires can be made with many types of metals and alloys, the most common of which are Nickel Titanium (NiTi) and stainless steel. NiTi is very flexible and retains its shape even after it has been deflected or bent. For this reason, it makes a great wire for the initial alignment of the teeth. When the teeth are crooked or misaligned, so are the brackets when initially cemented. We can flex the NiTi wire so that it engages all the teeth as it dips and bends from tooth to tooth. Once the wire is deflected, it "wants" to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies force to all the teeth that are engaged by the wire and thus aligns the teeth.
